Music Production Basics - A Few Music Mixing Tips For Beginners

Music Production Basics - A Few Music Mixing Tips For Beginners
By Steven Grout

I know how hard it can be when you are starting out in music production, you end up looking all over for resources with the aimi of to giving your songs some homemade professional music production. I have put together a few helpful points that any budding music producer should take a look at before they get behind a mixing desk. Whether you are involved in home music production or studio music production or you are just looking into producing music (from any genre), should take my points within music production basics and home studio basics into consideration.

Never listen to loud music before or during a mixing session - Listening to loud music is never really good but we all do it at sometimes. If you are into home recording mixing then the live element of high volume will not affect you, unless you turn your headphones up too high which is another bad thing altogether. Make sure you do not expose your ears to high volume on a day when you are mixing at all. Imagine if you are looking at a nice view, imagine if you are straining to see something on the horizon and then imagine if you are trying to focus on something that is too close to see. The nice view where everything is visible is the music level at a comfortable level; if you have it too loud or too quiet, you will miss a lot.

Position your speakers at ear level - It is necessary to have your monitor speakers on the same level and in line with your ear. There should be nothing in the way or blocking this invisible line that will be send sound straight to your ears. This will also counter any room ambiance that could affect what you do during your mix. Make sure there is not a huge distance between you and your speakers either as this can affect the choices you make within the mix and if you were to take the song when it is done to another room it would sound nothing like how you had it sounding with your faulty set up.

Do not involve people who do not have a clue about mixing or music - This is a little hard to say, so I will just say it.. Mixing is not for 'backseat drivers'. If you are starting out then you need to concentrate. Everyone thinks that they can do computer music production but as you will find it is just the same as external mixing, a little harder perhaps but a huge amount cheaper. You cannot have people hanging about and interfering and giving their 50 cents worth. If they know what they are doing, by all means involve them. If not, excluded them politely from the process as you will need to focus and no doubt read though some information and put it into practise.

There are many other music mixing tips to consider if you are interested in helping yourself understand how to produce music.I believe that if anyone ever wants to improve their music mixing techniques they should take a look at THIS website. It could be the case that you are stuck and do not know what to do next or it could be you are wanting to learn more skills and 'tricks of the trade', either way you should take a look.
